Why Rose Byrne Was ‘Nervous’ to Voice a Part in ‘Bluey’ Show

Rose Byrne is opening up about her latest experience in voice acting.

On Friday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the Physical actress tells host Drew Barrymore about her time voicing a part on the beloved children’s cartoon show Bluey.

“I was so nervous doing it because I’m such a fan,” the mother of two boys, Rocco and Rafa, shares, sitting next to her longtime love, Bobby Cannavale. “So, when I was in the booth, I was just like really nervous ’cause it meant so much to me and ’cause my children watch it and it’s like one of the few shows we all can watch together and I’m happy for them to watch. ‘Cause I’m like, it’s entertaining, but it’s really gentle and it’s funny and it’s emotional.”

Being a part of such a “gentle” show was an emotional experience for Byrne, who voiced a woman unable to have children.

“It’s such a gentle but effective show,” the 44-year-old actress says. “And it’s so a great example of good parenting weirdly but not to the point of hitting you over the head. It’s just, like, very subtle how they do it. It’s very funny.”

Bluey follows the titular character — who is a Blue Heeler Dog — and her family including parents Bandit and Chilli and her little sister, Bingo, as they navigate the highs and lows of life in their native Brisbane, Australia.

Byrne adds that the show’s music is incredible.

“The music is very emotional and very dramatic,” she says. “Like, it’s not music you would necessarily associate with a children’s cartoon. You know, it’s not goofy and I played Chilli’s sister, Brandy. And my episode is about a woman who can’t have kids, but it’s told through the eyes of the kids. So it’s really emotional.”

Byrne isn’t afraid to admit that a show meant for children has consistently brought her to tears.

“I’ve cried in Bluey many times watching it. It’s that sort of show. It’s very, really, and it does to a point sort of transcend age for that childhood gap before they hit teenagers.”

But Byrne isn’t the only celebrity parent who loves Bluey.

In March, the Jonas Brothers went full dad mode with a surprise Bluey intro after their intermission during the Five Albums One Night Tour in Brisbane.

Kicking off the second half of the show, the iconic theme song from the Emmy Award-winning series began and the screen above the stage went blue. In place of Bluey and her family’s names, Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas flashed on the screen to the crowd’s surprise.

The brothers are all girl dads and are naturally fans of the popular children’s show.
